How Gonstead care is applied
The Gonstead method involves detailed analysis to understand how your nerves, muscles, and bones work together – far beyond a simple spinal adjustment.
After identifying the issue and confirming chiropractic care is appropriate, we tailor a plan focused on achieving results with as few adjustments as needed.
Taking your history
Every consultation starts with listening—taking the time to learn about your health story and what’s brought you in.
Visual assessment
With a strong understanding of posture and movement, we observe how you move to spot subtle imbalances or concerns.
Instrumental analysis
Using our precision nervoscope tool to run down your spine, we watch for temperature changes that can indicate underlying nerve problems.
Static palpation
With an expert touch, we feel along your spine for swelling or tenderness to help identify the source of your pain, which may be referred from another area.
Motion palpation
While moving your spine gently, we assess for any irregular motion between segments to help identify where support may be needed.
X-ray imaging
We take an on-site X-ray for an instant image of your spine to check joint and disc integrity and vertebral alignment. This further informs our thorough analysis and helps us to provide meticulous and precise chiropractic care.
Targeted spinal adjustment
Once we’ve run our thorough assessment, we’ll recommend whether you need any chiropractic care. If you do need adjustments, we’ll explain our plan and give you a chance to ask questions.
Once you’re comfortable with the proposed treatment, we’ll carry out your adjustment using the Gonstead approach—focused, accurate movements designed to support alignment and ease discomfort.
Your adjustments are tailored through the Gonstead method to align with your unique health goals and support a greater sense of wellbeing.
The origins of Gonstead care
The Gonstead chiropractic system is an approach developed by Dr Clarence Gonstead in the 1940s. Dr Gonstead was particularly interested in finding more effective ways to locate and correct spinal misalignments and was guided by biomechanics and the interactions between vertebral discs and nerve pressure. Through extensive clinical research, Gonstead developed a complete method of biomechanical analysis based on through examination of the whole spine, not just the affected area.
During the 1950s, as demand for his approach grew, Dr Gonstead’s team started sharing his method with other practitioners and went on to open the Gonstead Clinic of Chiropractic in Wisconsin in 1964.
Widely taught and practised internationally, the Gonstead system is recognised by many as a high standard of chiropractic technique.
Chiropractic Symphony practitioners are proud members of the Gonstead Chiropractic Society, offering a methodical and compassionate approach to your care.
